Why Online Colleges Are For Those Serious About Their Careers

Online colleges have long been in question for the type of education that they offer to individuals. For years, colleges and universities that solely offered courses online carried the stigma that the education they provided was not adequate and not as well-rounded as the type of education received from a traditional on-campus university.

However, that stigma is changing, and the educations provided by online colleges and universities are now being highly sought after – by both individuals desiring a degree and by employers desiring employees with more specialized training.

Currently, the unemployment rate for the United States is at 9.1 percent. Nearly 14 million people are unemployed, and a majority of those are so because they lack the specialized training desired by employers. Long gone are the days of working your way up to the top. You simply can’t walk onto a job site with no education and expect to become CEO in the next 5 to 10 years.

Outsourcing and the automation of several blue collar positions have made it difficult for those with or without high school diplomas to achieve jobs. These types of jobs simply aren’t available in the numbers that they once were, and it has left many wondering where they can find jobs.

There has never been any doubt that higher education is indeed important if you wan to achieve a long-lasting career; however, the face of that education has change. Specialization is now key.

Employers want to hire individuals with both experience and education. They want them to have drive and to be self-starters, but aren’t willing to train them to have these qualities. Training is now seen as a waste of time and money so you have to come as the complete package if you would like to achieve gainful employment.

An online degree conveys that you are, indeed, the complete package. Once online college degrees were frowned upon, but now they seem to make job candidates stand out amongst the crowd. As an online college degree holder, you prove that you were able to take charge of your own education, manage your schedule effectively, and take on a work load greater than most all while holding down one, if not two, jobs to make ends meet.

That’s impressive, and conveys to employers that you are not afraid to go after what you want, and know how to actively seek solutions and follow through.

However, online colleges don’t have to be solely for those looking to achieve their bachelor’s degree. If you have a degree and are currently unemployed, taking a few courses online can give you the specialization needed to better fit a position. The proactiveness demonstrated by pursuing additional education will also be recognized by employers for the same reasons as they would for someone who obtained their bachelor’s degree online.

The job market has changed dramatically in the last 5 years. Jobs are harder to come by and even tougher to obtain. For every one position posted, employers expect to see at least 200 applicants submit their resumes. To make yourself stand out from that stack of 200 applications, you have to demonstrate that you aren’t afraid to.

It’s an employers’ market. They can get the brightest and the best for a reduced price. Show them that you are amongst that elite crowd, and don’t be afraid to flaunt your superior experience and education. It’ll get you moved more quickly to the top of the interview pile and into that cush office job quicker than you would have imagined.
