It was an unintentional "experiment" on my part, and I admit that the evidence is strictly anecdotal, but the fact is that not one employer who I sent the must-include-but-not-thought-out cover letter called me for an interview. Everyone who got the catchy cover letter did call me, and I interviewed with every single one! In fact, I reapplied to one job and submitted the new and improved cover letter and they called--like I had never sent in the first one!
