The New Way To Use Your Resume!
Sep 7th, 2009 | By Bill | Category: Employment News, ResumesWe all have heard time and again how the economy has only made job searching much more difficult and competitive. But is it really? Maybe you’re still doing things the old-fashioned way by “shot-gunning” your well-written resume to as many potential employers as possible and using the speed and convenience of the internet to help you. In the rush to “act” and the fear to not “sit and think”, you end up being quite short-sighted! It’s the wrong way!! Your resume should be used as a “Marketing tool” and not a “Bio”! First, focus on “the hot jobs”. Then, use the resume to show your “unique ability” to provide immediate results for the prospective employer, and how your skills are oriented toward the revenue-producing aspects of the employer. Make it an “eye-opener”!
On top of all that, with the flood of resumes and applicants coming in to employers from all angles, they are really looking for ways to filter out the “cream of the crop”. Many are, therefore, increasing their uses of the services of job recruiters, career counselors and other such agencies to do this screening for them. This, of course, leaves this avenue open to you as well. Recruiters, however, do not like applicants who have “shot-gunned” their resumes around not only because you have provided information free, but because it probably has already been presented improperly, and now being discarded or eliminated from client short lists.
Recruiters can very often “cut to the chase” and give you some insights into the job market that you have either overlooked or underestimated. They very often have detailed information on openings that may not have been available to you on the “open” market. After all, that is their profession and, remember, that they normally get paid their commissions after you get placed in a satisfactory job.
In any case, do not just send out your resume indiscriminately to all possible employers. Develop a “big picture” strategy and be creative.
