5 Things Not to Include in a Resume

Employers screen resumes several times and the first round eliminates many of the candidates for a position based upon this one sheet of paper. Many times the best person doesn’t get hired based solely on the qualifications outlined in this document. Remember, a resume is first read by a hiring manager and not necessarily the department manager. Therefore, it should be polished and professional in order to get noticed. This is after all the primary reason for producing one in the first place. Now, without further ado, here are

5 things not to include in a resume.

1. Don’t include punctuation, spelling or grammatical errors in a resume. These are the quickest ways to get the paper deposited in the garbage. Use the spellchecker included in the word processing program, but also employ a human to cast a critical eye as well.

2. Don’t include a funny or unprofessional sounding email address on the resume header (e.g. sexkitten123@hotmail.com). A manager will undoubtedly question the seriousness of the candidate.

3. Don’t include the reasons for termination/laid off. These can be discussed in the interview. Don’t give a manager a reason to discard the resume in the first round.

4. Don’t use inappropriate job objectives such as “seeking a challenging position…”. If the job is challenging, then the learning curve will be steep. Most companies want a self-starter, but need the job done quickly.

5. Don’t use slang or terminology relevant only to a specific field. Remember who is scanning the resumes to find the candidates. If the resume isn’t understood, it most likely won’t be read.

Use these tips wisely, but get that resume written! Remember, to get a foot in the door, it takes an outstanding document to get noticed by that certain company.

    Overall I agree with this post. The point the author makes is the resume is intended to get you a phone call for that interview. But I must take excpetion to #4. You say a person should NOT put “seeking a challenging position? What should they put? Seeking an easy job? Challenge does not equate long learning curve. And bieng a self starter has nothing to do with having a challenging job. You can be a self starter and completely unqualified.
