Mastering job market research is a skill which will help you in two ways. First of all it will enable you to find a career that you will enjoy and secondly it will help you identify industries in which there are plenty of vacancies.

The way things are in the current job market, you could spend years looking for a new position and once you do find it, you’ll probably want to hold onto it for as long as you can. To avoid the former and have a better chance of achieving the latter, you should learn how to research the job market.

Tip #1

Do some broad research and keep an open mind. There are so many jobs and careers out there, with new ones appearing all the time, and so you may find something you never even knew existed is the ideal career for you. Technology and especially the internet have given rise to many jobs which give today’s jobseeker greater flexibility. It is possible to carry out many jobs from any location in the world these days and the opportunities for home businesses have increased dramatically in the last few years.

Tip#2

Find people who are doing the jobs you are interested in and get their advice. People really like to give advice – it makes them feel important! This isn’t as difficult as you may think, as there are online forums for many industries, as well as business and networking communities. So, with a little digging, you should be able to locate people would be willing to give you some insider information.

Tip #3

Talk to your friends. Quite a few companies have started to ask employees to recommend friends for jobs. This makes a lot of sense, as friends are likely to know quite a bit about your abilities and how well you might fit in with the company. And they won’t want to jeopardize their own jobs by recommending people who are unsuitable. So if you know someone who has a job in a company you’d like to work for, have a chat to see what the situation is.

The traditional method of hiring staff, by advertising in the press and then short listing and interviewing a handful of candidates is actually one of the least effective ways of employing new staff. So even if the company in question isn’t actively using this recommend a friend technique, they might be interested in trying it out.
