Telecommuting an Alternative to Full Time Employment
Jan 27th, 2009 | By Bill | Category: Employment NewsBefore the downturn in the economy companies have increasingly reduced the size of their work force in order to reduce cost and maintain profitability. Companies have done this by offering employees early retirement packages, by cutting back on hiring new employees, by out sourcing jobs overseas and ultimately by relocating their businesses overseas.
As an end results this puts a lot of pressure on the labor market as there are fewer jobs to go around and as more jobs become specialized to compensate for the demands of the revised work environment.
When the economy gets as bad as it currently is, with employers handing out pink slips to ten’s of thousands of employees and with job losses exceeding hundreds of thousands a month, you begin to wonder how one can survive in such an environment.
What you first need to realize is that even though companies are firing their employees to cut cost (salary, social security contributions, unemployment compensation contributions, medical coverage, 401k contributions…), the companies still need work to be done. There’s no way around this.
Second as an experienced employee you have skills and experience you can utilize to help these companies do the work they require, your role here will be as a Telecommuting or Virtual employee. A Telecommuting employee does the work of an on-site employee but virtually using his/her computer and an internet connection.
The difference between this type of employment is that as a virtual employee you are now a contract worker and as such are not entitled to the compensation and benefits that an on-site employee is entitled to.
Even though this may not be quite to the liking of some individuals it does offer several advantages,
1) You can work your own hours
2) You can work on several different projects
3) You can acquire new skills working for different companies
4) You can develop new contacts through your with different companies
5) You can work from where ever you like as long as you have a computer and an internet connection
As a result of 2, 3, and 4 when the economy rebounds and your able to get back into the regular work force you are better positioned and more employable, because your skill set will be greater than other job seekers your competing against.
Another advantage is you have a better inside track on which companies are a better fit with what you know and can do. There are many companies that specialize in the field of Telecommuting; they usually require a small one time membership fee to gain access to their databases of companies that are looking for Telecommuting employees.
With these companies you can find Telecommuting jobs in several areas including:
Customer Service Programming Data Entry Work-From-Home Lawyer Work-From-Home Nurse Paralegal Translators Merchandising Research Real Estate Sales Social Services Writing Web Jobs Medical Finance writing Sales Marketing Graphic Art Engineering Business Web Design…
If you’ve been laid off or are looking to secure additional income consider Telecommuting Employment, it’s a good step for replacing lost income, acquiring additional income, or increasing you skills and experience.
