Those of us who've been around the barn know that networking is an imperative for new jobs, transfers, stretch opportunities, and corporate intelligence. There is fascinating research that shows three facts re networking: you'll get a faster promotion, you'll find better opportunities, and you'll get faster raises. Can't beat that!

One of my proteges, a 25 year old, has worked at networking for little over a year. He works in a top financial services company, made a very wise divisional switch in house, got a lot of support and is working on his next switch for still more tools in his tookit. He tells me that not a single person in his 150 person division networks, that they think he's from another planet, and they don't get it at all. FYI: he says that it takes about six months of network building to start paying off. All of that is especially scary for the future of his Millennial colleagues.
