Strategies For Dealing With Being Fire
Oct 27th, 2008 | By Bill | Category: Employment NewsDon’t Let Your Termination Rattle You
To ward off the negative feelings that come from a termination, it would be good to have a night out with friends and have a good time to release your anger and stress. You should be sure to be your usual self if you should happen to encounter your former boss. Avoid giving dirty looks and expressing your anger.
If you run into co-workers, talk to them briefly, but take care that you do not discuss your being fired. It is necessary to portray strength and determination to tackle the situation instead of being weak and indecisive. Staying at home just watching TV is not good.
Get active and get your life back on track.
Start a Job Search Right Away
Draw up a job search plan. Be focused and take firm steps toward securing fresh employment and treat job hunting as fulltime work. Contact recruiting agencies and career centers and search for job openings in newspapers, magazines, and any place jobs are posted.
Seek interviews by sending appropriately-tailored resumes for suitable jobs that are open. To get yourself back on track, work hard to get the first job that is suitable even if it is not an ideal one that you would want to stay in for a long time.
If you land such a job, continue your search until you find the best job for yourself and you are on your way.
Contact the Unemployment Insurance Office and Your Workers’ Union
If you are handed a pink slip, get in touch with the nearest unemployment insurance office without delay. Send an e-mail, make a phone call, or better yet, visit them personally to check on your eligibility for unemployment benefits and the process for filing a compensation claim, if you qualify.
Never feel ashamed to ask for assistance and apply for unemployment benefits. You have made contributions for this through your taxes and are entitled to the compensation. Make sure you take this step as early as possible because it usually takes a few weeks for your claim to be processed.
Early registration is important, because you will not be entitled to any unemployment benefits before the date of registration of your claim. The unemployment insurance office will also help you with training facilities and job lists if applicable.
You also need to contact your workers’ union for advice regarding your rights. Seek their assistance with respect to possible programs for laid-off workers.
Other important information you need to get from them regards accrued vacation pay, sick leave pay, pension payouts, separation pay, and continuance of health and life insurance benefits.
Try To Secure a Recommendation Letter
Go to the personnel manager or someone in the personnel department of the company you are leaving for a letter of recommendation. This can be of great help when you apply for a fresh job. Also, check if the company provides outplacement assistance.
