How to Get Back Into the Job Market

Oct 22nd, 2008 | By Bill | Category: Employment News

Check out these tips and tricks. They will help you get your confidence up before you go for an interview.

Plan Your Career First

Decide what kind of work you would like to do. The popular saying that if you fail to plan, you plan to fail certainly applies to searching for a job. Make a chart of your ambitions and plans.

If you want to pursue your career in a particular field, don’t jump into another one just for the sake of a job. Instead, seek out an organization known for its training in that particular field to brush up on your skills in the particular job you are targeting.

Become Computer Savvy

In today’s fast-moving, tech-savvy world it is important to be computer literate and Internet savvy. Online job boards offer the opportunity to register your resume. Employers and recruiters all over the globe will have access to your resume and there are higher chances of recruitment in a particular field.

These databases re handled by job-board organizations. They put all your details in the public domain and increase your visibility in the marketplace. They can also make it possible for your online job hunt to be kept confidential.

Blog

Make your own blog. It will give you the opportunity to become an authority on your particular business. It will also offer insights about your character and experience to potential employers.

A blog can act as a personal public relations tool. You can link your blog to other blogs to enhance your credibility and profile. Personal recommendations and word-of-mouth are very effective forms of advertising.

Inform your friends, neighbors, and relatives that you plan to look for a job and specify your requirements. Most organizations hire people through recommendations and don’t bother to advertise many of their open positions.

Network

Contact former colleagues to ferret out potential opportunities. Get client testimonials to add to your resume. Put your details on job bulletin boards so employers and recruiters can access your resume online.

If you’re looking to change your career and plan to take a job in a new field, you should talk to someone who already works in that field. Ask them for suggestions regarding the job, how they got where they are, and what it takes to get a similar job. People love to talk about themselves, so they will probably give you detailed information.

It is never too late to look for a job after you’ve been out for awhile. Keep a positive attitude and start hunting. Plan and keep your options open and don’t just settle for anything that comes along.

If you are going to work with recruiters, it would be good to publish you resume anonymously. If you are posted all over the job boards, there is less of a chance a recruiter will work with you because you are overexposed. So keep those job board posts anonymous!

  3. I really like this saying: “If you fail to plan, you plan to fail.” I think that this not only applies to searching for jobs, but also to getting the skills needed way before the search begins. Your advice about becoming “computer savvy” is excellent. Most jobs, even jobs at fast food restaurants require some knowledge of technology — however little. But if you’re aiming a bit higher, there is no doubt that you will need computer skills. There are several ways to get the computer skills needed to operate basic computer programs such as Word and Excel, as well as email and the Internet. You can take a class at a local community college less than $100; you can take a class at your local learning center, in many cases for less that $100 per class; if you’re a senior, your local senior center will typically offer 4-8 week computer classes starting at around $50, or you can take a computer class at your local library for free! Just contact your local library and ask if/when they offer computer classes and sign up right away. Slots tend to fill up very quickly. Good Luck!
