How to Change Jobs – On Your Terms
Oct 15th, 2008 | By Bill | Category: Employment NewsMy friend Pete’s mother hated her job for as long as I can remember. She actually hated going to work every day, not because it is work, but because she did not like the work she did, her boss, or the company she worked for. I have never understood why she continued to go to work when she hates it so much. Pete finally asked her about it and what she said surprised him.
In order to change your career you need to be able to sell yourself. There are many things that enable you to sell yourself. One of those things in my friends mothers’ case is was she was employed with the same company for ten years. She was a long term employee with a good track record at her job. This will help her get another job. What surprised me though is that she felt she did not have the confidence she needed to go on job interviews and really sell herself outside of her resume.
How does a person help their mother gain confidence? My friend offered her books, paid for seminars, and suggested websites, pointed out all of the strengths she has that he could think of. He called her daily with pep talks and insisted she would be a great asset to any employer (of course he was biased; it is his mother after all). Nothing worked and he could not figure out how to help motivate her or how to build her confidence so he started researching online.
He started looking into confidence building techniques and methods. I always thought confidence is an inherent quality. My friend had never been lacking in that area and if anything he is over-confident in his abilities regardless of what he is doing. After quite a bit of searching, he stumbled upon hypnosis. It gave him food for thought. He had never considered using hypnosis to help make a career change. His mom used hypnosis to quit smoking when he was younger, so he knew she would be open to the idea of it.
Quitting smoking and changing careers are two completely different things though. So, he brought it up to his mom and she was open to the idea. What hypnosis does is give a person the foundation for something they already want or know. Pete’s mother wanted to be confident enough in herself to make a career change. With some simple suggestions while under hypnosis, she was able to put the confidence she felt she lacked into the forefront of her mind.
She was able to stay calm on interviews, beat the anxiety of sending out her resume and ultimately get a better job, doing work she cared about, for a company she actually enjoys. I do not know what the odds are of this happening. I don’t know what the statistics are in regard to hypnosis and career changes. I do know that it helped my friends mother make a good, life changing decision. If nothing else, it certainly won’t hurt your chances of changing careers and it may just give you the boost you need to make it happen.
