Practice, Preparation Can Help Ace Interviews

For many of us, heading out on a job interview is a daunting task and people do make big mistakes.

Experts say some interviewers make up their minds in 30 seconds, so a good first impression is crucial.

Eleta Jones, of the University of Hartford Center For Professional Development, said that one of the most important things a person needs to do is prepare.

She recommends always being confident, smiling and dressing well.

Also, she said, research the company you’re interviewing with and know how your skills fit in.

“Employers are looking for somebody who can explain their skills and how their skills really relate to the job that they’re trying to get into,” she said.

Be prepared for behavioral questions that seek examples of how you’ve solved problems on the job, how you’ve made or saved money for a company and how you’ve overcome workplace stress.

Just as important as what you say in the interview is how you say it.

Slouching in your seat can make you appear disinterested and rubbing and touching your nose can make you seem dishonest.

Sitting with your arms folded can make you appear unfriendly or unapproachable.

Jones said the best thing to do is to prepare what you are going to say. “Practice, and practice out loud, because then you can hear how you’re coming across.”
